David's Comment
Welcome to the first newsletter from the Hout Street Gallery in Paarl.
Over the 35 years that Gail and I have been running the Gallery, we have met many people and made many firm friends.
Through this newsletter,
we hope to keep you updated with the latest news and developments, encourage your feedback and forge new friendships.
It's been a busy time for the Gallery as we prepare for our forthcoming Winter Gala
exhibition and we have also recently launched our revised website.
Please visit www.houtstreetgallery.co.za and let us know your feedback.

Tisa Mertz
I first met Tisa Mertz eight years ago and was captured by the gentle,
Impressionistic style of her work, which often depicts women in their everyday activities and explores the relationship with each other.
Tisa, who has a degree in psychology from Stellenbosch University, is one of the featured artists in our Winter Gala, so we asked her to share a few thoughts with us:

Q: Why did you start painting?
TM: My father was an artist, so I grew up in an artistic milieu.
Q: How has your style evolved over the years?
TM: I studied art and received tuition from the late Paarl artist, Nico Hagen, as well as Ryno Swart, who taught me the importance of drawing.
All of my paintings are now based on drawings, unlike many other artists who base their paintings on photographs. Then I simplify and abstract the form.
Like many artists, I first painted realistically and then moved to an impressionistic style. I have also received much guidance from David Zetler,
whom I consider a mentor, and I am delighted to be exhibiting at the Winter Gala as part of the Gallery’s 35th year.
Q: What inspires you to paint?
TM: The sea and nature in general! I love observing people in their activities and environment.
Q: Do you have a routine and what is your process of painting?
TM: Absolutely. I have a routine and try to be disciplined and stick to it on a daily basis.
I wash the canvas with colour and sketch with a brush dipped in colour. As mentioned, I always base my work on my drawings, which I extrapolate in terms of size.
The magic of being lost in the process of painting is sheer heaven!
